Reliable Breeder/Good Place To Buy

shyguy4217 Aug 19, 2004 12:15 AM

I plan on purchasing a crested gecko soon and I was wondering what the best place to buy healthy CB ones at a very reasonable price with cheap shipping(I'm on a tight budget). It doesn't have to be any specific morph, just normal, the sex doesn't matter either. So basically I just want a crested gecko, the only thing that matters is that it is a healthy CB animal and that the price is right.

I was looking at ReptileDepot.com and they had some for $29.99 under the "Summer Specials" is that only for the club members though? And I was wondering what the ReptileDepot.com animal quality is, does anyone have experience with this?

Any replies are greatly appreciated

Thanks
-Eric-

Eric,

Well bub…I would love to help you out, but I personally don’t have any available at the time. I do know however that there are many great breeders out there. It is just a matter of personal preference. I would search the web (different websites) and send e-mail and even talk on the phone with some of the breeders. I know that we like to know who we are talking to and who is going to be taking care of the cresteds we send to them and make sure that they are familiar with what to expect. I send a printed out caresheet with misc notes (feeding times, actual food/mixes, anything that I may notice about the individual gecko) with my geckos that I send out, just to give them an idea of what I have been doing to them as they grow. There are a few breeders, Allen, Anthony, Bobby, Loren & Penny, Shawn & Amy…just to name a few, that have extraordinary geckos, but also have regular or “natural” geckos for sale also. It is just a matter of getting with them and seeing what they have. Take your time and do your homework first. You will be glad later on down the road.

Now to the Shipping & Handling dilemma. Well, I don’t know what to tell you, but the S&H charges are going to be 30-35 bucks. You have to keep in mind, we have to use a heavy cardboard insulated box (keep the geckos protected from crush injuries), heat/cool packs(keep the temp consistent) , small plastic containers to house the gecko and keep the humidity consistent, along with packaging materials – Then, overnight it so that it will be in the next day by 10:30AM. That is just what we have to put up with to send geckos, snakes and other various reptiles for now. I prefer to use Fed-Ex and will use UPS, but will not use USPS. I know some people use them, but I had a very bad experience with them about a year ago (long story) and will never use them again. That is that…

Soooo Eric, all I can say is, if you don’t have the cash flow right now, it would be best to sit on it for a little bit, do some looking at different breeders, and until you get a little more cash and do it right the first time. I would hate for you to have a bad experience and leave a sour taste in your mouth if you know what I mean…Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions. Good luck and happy hunting…..

or you can wait for a reptile show in your area.

If you ask for one in your area most ppl can reply and tell you where and when to go.

Shows are the best because you can talk to the breeders in person, see the animal in person and avoid shipping costs.
I got mine (male, almost full adult) for $90 canadian

Good luck

Maybe we could talk, I'm in Wisconsin. I bought all my breeding stock from Sandfire, Dragon's Den, Sticky Feet and just lately, some babies from Anthony Caponetto. I've got some great patterns from wonderful colors. See Keith Hillson's post on July 8th.
