thinking about getting a cresty....substrate question

zennygirl Aug 19, 2004 12:35 AM

is potting soil an acceptable substrate for a crested gecko. i would like to keep live plants in there and think it would be great for humidity though i don't know if soil is okay. i've read orchid bark is a good one but can't grow much in that. or what if i layed orchid bark down on top of the soil?

Hi-potting soil is fine but you have to make sure that there isn't any fertilizers or any other chemicals in it. With mine I use Eco-earth, you'd probably be able to plant live plants in that too. Also I don't know if you know but there is a forum more directed to crested geckos. If you scroll down a little under the link for this forum there's one that says Rhacodactylus-that's the scientific family for cresteds...there species is ciliatus. Feel free to post there also. Best of luck.
