My first suggestion would be to avoid getting your snake from a "pet" store. At the very least go to a shop that specializes in reptiles. Better yet, find a local breeder. The quality and health of reptiles at your average pet store is always suspect, IMHO!
If you're looking for a smaller boa type see if you can locate a Hog Island boa, or other insular form. The Hogs generally do not get much more than 6 feet long. Some of the Central American boas can tend to be a little smaller than Colombian BCI's, but you'd want to see the parents to know for sure.

I agree with Steve, get a boa from a breeder. They know the animals history and ussually charge less than a pet store. Also, Hogg Island Boas are great smaller boas. Check out Rio Bravo Reptiles, PM Herps, and Hanley Herps. They all have had litters this year and they look great!! Here is my Hoggie!!
