Are live plants suitable for use in a boa cage? If so what kind would be good. I was looking for something like an ivy or vine that doesn't need to be planted in earth and will grow covering the sides.

I would suggest not to use live plants. Your boa will break the plants, and cleaning would be a B*@ch, you can't disinfect the plants. If you want to add a little greenery put in some fake ones, just make sure to clean them thoroughly when you do your cage cleaning. Good luck with the new boa! And slow your speed down just a bit
