Responsible People

About five months ago I stupidly put a Plexiglas divider between my females and male. I know have now five crested gecko babies and three more eggs. I have to sell a couple of them but I'm torn. I going to sell them at the All Ohio Reptile Show but I don't want them to be just a breeding project. I really want them to go to responsible people who want them as pets. Do you think it is silly to ask some questions before selling?

i think it is wise to ask questions before selling. i cant stand breeders who see live animals simply as profits. maybe its just me, but its no different than a kid.

Huhmmm...

Interesting. Well Alisha, these are YOUR geckos and you can do as you feel. If you want to screen your potential buyers, then do it. But keep in mind, these are not puppies or other warm blooded animal that needs human companionship. I know that these screening are done, OR SHOULD BE, for dogs, because they are pack animals and have to have constant attention from humans or "their pack", and yes I believe the pack-dog theory, but for geckos...I dunno. To be honest, most people are going to buy cresteds to be "pretty" or "unique" in color and to try to capitalize on that. It is the simple fact of the matter. You can ask their intentions, but depending on the person, 90% of the time, will be to try and breed them and sell them. If you have become too attached to them, all I can say is leave them at home and get some more tanks. Other than that, good luck and have fun at the show!!!

Well, for my own peace of mind, I ask questions of people to make sure they understand what they are getting into and are informed enough to take good care. If you didn't care what happened to them, I would be more suspicious of you as the seller. I make sure they have my email in case there are any questions or problems. I don't think you can stipulate that folks not raise them and breed them, but I tell people that I personally think creatures should have a mate; I just think it's unnatural for any critter to live out its life solo, but if they get eggs that they'd rather not mess with hatching, to just crack them open & throw them out. All of my adults are in breeding groups right now, but I have so many babies now that soon I will stop saving eggs except from the pair that has produced the best babies.

I work at a pet store north of Columbus. Trust me, a breeder will take better care of your geckos than some average yahoo buying a 'pet' on impulse. I see what happens to people's 'pets'.
