Want to start a bearded dragon breeding and supply business.

beardielover13 Aug 19, 2004 01:46 PM

I currently breed a small amount of dragons (1.1 group) and want to know if anyone knows what kind of phases I could get so I wouldn't have to just wholsale my babies. What kind of supplies could I buy wholsale to sell to new beardie owners that would possibly proffitable? No, I don't want to sell beardies to make a profit. Thanks.

"No, I don't want to sell beardies to make a profit".

Ummm, isn't that counter productive to being a "business"? By far your tightest margins are going to be on the supplies (as opposed to animals) so making a profit on them will require a huge selection and large volume of business. Hard to accomplish by only catering to the bearded dragon crowd.

Well, i don't want to make a large profit, just enough to feed them and expand. I won't have to feed myself by breeding and selling them.

In building our business plan we realized that dragons are not profitable with anything less than 10 groups going at one time (due to re-useable resources, ability to negotiate lower feeder bills, building a marketing plan to move the offspring).

The time required is at least 40 man hours per week if not more depending upon how the clutches are spread out.

The whole business is based upon scale. With current costs and market prices any profit is only going to be found at moving a number of dragons and supplies.

This is not to get you down, but rather give you a real world view into the business side.

Can't answer your question on morphs, but as far as if you don't want to wholesale them, you've basically got two options. Set up a nice website where people can order direct from you or attend shows and conventions and get a booth. Still, if you only have a single breeding pair, its going to take a few years before you're likely to break even on your dragons (and this is assuming that things go smoothly).

What area of the country are you in?

If you're in California or Florida there's alot of competition and that tends to drive prices down. If you somewhere in middle America, its better. I'm in Dallas and normal baby beardies retail from $60 to $90. I used to live in San Diego and normal prices were $45 to $70.

If you do attend shows, the premium morphs do go for some high prices ($200 or so), but normals go for as low as $10 or $15.

Good thing you don't want to make a profit as BD's are practically a dime a dozen. At the last herp show I attended, BD's were at almost every table and were around 10-20$ for a normal. Anyhoo, good luck with your latest endeavor.

I am in the northern part of Idaho. I only know of 1 other breeder in this area.
