kingd Aug 19, 2004 02:24 PM

does anyone have any ideas if this would be a bad idea. ive seen some pics of albinos on black gravel. they looked so nice, was wondering if it would be a bad idea? would the gravel get to hot from useing a heat lamp?

I think you mean substrate. I don't think using gravel as a normal substrate would be good. Gravel is used at shows to accentuate the snakes but most still use aspen, cypress, or paper as substrate away from shows.

I definitely be careful about feeding on it, but not sure of any reason why it might not be okay to use. We keep a lot of our snakes on gravel at the Indianapolis Zoo with no problems.

I think gravel has it's good points and bad points. It holds heat great, if you use heat tape or a heat pad. I don't like it because of it's weight. It also makes cleaning a bit harder because everything the snake deposits goes through the gravel to the bottom of the cage and stays wet.
