I personally have a Dumerils Boa and a friend of mine has a red-tail. Both are great snakes. It basically comes down to personal preference and if you want to deal with a snake that has the potential to get rateher large. Dumerils still get pretty big, and can be rather impressive snakes. They grow alot slower and as you said, tend to like to remain hidden. mine likes to stay under the substrate (aspen). But whichever you decide to go with, I am sure you will enjoy both as they are both great snakes.

you are right dumerils are a bit shyer than colombians. i own three
bci & one dumerils. this does not make me a expert. but what i have
seen is my dumerils doesn't like to be taken out an held and played
with as much as my colombians. also i have heard that dumerils like a low traffic area in the house. mine is in a sweeter box rack shelf
and seems to feel safe. she never hides under the shavings. the good
thing about dumerils is they don't generally get as big as colombians. mine is very sweet and tame. I'm sure that you would enjoy either one.
