sphagnum moss question

Zoosnake Aug 19, 2004 04:44 PM

I just bought a bag of Scotts sphagnum moss from Home Depot, and I want to know if it's safe for my adult CRB. I'd been using ZooMed's moss, which comes in large fibrous strands and clumps. When I opened the bag of Scotts I was surprised that it looked like dirt (i.e., very fine particles). Just thought I'd check and see if this stuff is okay to use in a damp hide box. My guy is starting his opaque phase and needs to be extra moist right now until he sheds. Thanks for the help.

I haven't liked the type of moss you are talking about. I used to use the larger strand stuff but had problems with it molding to quickly. If it gets moldy the spores can get into the snakes lung and create problems. I switched to cypress mulch a few years ago. I put a lid on a hide box and place it on a heater. Wet it down and it works great. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the moss it just needed switched too often for my liking.

I'm not sure if I have a great mind but that is exactly what I do.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll go through this bag of moss since I have it, and then I'll give the cyprus mulch a shot. I've had a similar problem with ZooMed moss molding quickly, but it seemed to be only certain packages. Some would last forever, others would turn moldy in 2 days. I'm glad to know that, aside from the mold issue, this fine moss won't be a problem for my guy.
