do you know perhaps what went wrong(sorry if that sounds insensitive!)? Some of my neighbor's dogs passed recently and without warning from poisoning. Same thing happened to my other neighbor's cat as well. Just making sure something doesn't get by unnoticed. Sorry again for your loss.

Well, she was sick for two days and couldn't hold anything down, not even water. We called the vet and made an appointment after the first day but before my wife took her in she was vomiting small traces of blood that afternoon, which was day 2.My wife took her in early as an emergency case. My wife had to get someone to help her carry the dog because she couldn't walk and was lethargic. She got to the vet and she had a massive tumor in her liver area. The vet said she could perform surgery but with her condition like it was there was only a very small chance she would come out of surgery ok.The vet recommeneded putting her to sleep so thats what my wife had done. This was SUDDEN. She seemed very healthy besides some arthritis in her hind legs then all of a sudden WAM she was hit with this. My regret is I was at work and had NO idea until after my wife called and I didn't have any chance to say goodbye. We thought she might have had some sort of stomach virus/parasite not a massive internal tumor/cancer. Like I said she showed no signs of illness until the day before we took her to the vet. The first day she seemed ok besides the vomiting and it wasn't like she was vomiting all the time. The 2nd day I woke up and went to work and she just didn't look right and when my wife got home from work she said she was in the basement not moving at all and noticed the blood which she just rushed her to the vet at that point and called me and I said just do whats best for the dog. Never imagined her not coming back. My wife is heart broken because now she is thinking maybe she should have had the surgery but if a vet says the best thing is putting her to sleep then I feel she made the right choice but she is 2nd guessing herself now.

My sincere sympathy over your loss. I have quite a few herps, but I'm a dog lover as well. How old was the rottie, and how long had you had him?

Given the circumstances/symptoms, it looks to me like you all did the right things, and did everything that possibly could have been done if the dog could have been saved. I hope your wife doesn't continue to second guess her decision (and the vet's recommendation) to put him to sleep, but rather can find comfort in the fact that she helped to relieve him of a great deal of suffering.

She was 8 y.o. Rotties are know for a lot of problems when they get older and their lifespan is only 8-11 years. I tried 2 tell my wife she made the right choice...but she is pretty down on herself right now...

Just a thought, but check with neighbors to make sure no one put out moth ball or moth crystals on their lawn to "keep animals off". Here in Florida it's a common tragedy. Some idiot hears that this chemical will keep animals off his yard and puts it out. My sister and 5 other neighbors all lost dogs because one idiot did just this. The dogs get very sick, and they basically die because the chemical makes it impossible for their bodies to utilize oxygen.
