two males together bad?

Balrog Aug 20, 2004 03:03 AM

Is it dangerous to put 2 male nigerians together? i have a red, and i would like a yellow. the yellow females are kinda dull looking so that is why i want another male. can i keep them in the same tank?

two males almost never get along. mine fight all the time so i had to seperate them. turtle lost a few spikes on his tail
some people say that it might work with a large enough cage with different food bowls and basking spots. but it all depends on the uros. i would not chance it. but its up to you if you want to try. but keep a good eye on them.

Me and My brother have 2 male Mali Uromastyx in the same terrarium together. 1 basking spot, 1 food bowl. They've been together ever since they were little. I mean they're only 3 years old now, but they've been together since 2 yrs old. They like the company of one another and cuddling together (one will lay on top the other and sleep). My bro's is a little smaller and mine is fat. I have the lazy one of the two, my bro's is much more rambunxious and mine's more liad back.

I'd say try introducing them to each other, and see how they act. And if they don't try to fight and get along then keep introducing them and making little "together" dates, and if they get along then go ahead and keep them in the same cage, just make sure it's plenty big for the two of them and that you check in on them during the day to make sure they are both all right and not fighting.

triad's correct in mentioning to keep a close eye on them but there's another thing that's not so easy to spot. Passive aggressive may be an issue where they don't actually fight physically. If one is dominant and the other can hold it own, so to speak, the dominant can actually keep the submissive from eating and basking. sometimes the only way to tell is monitoring weights and activity (getting lithargic). Another possibilty is if a uro gets hard spots around the neck and hip area where the dominant may be nipping at the other.

If possible, get the new one, put it in a tank where the two future roomies can see each other (maybe butt the two tanks together) and see how they handle it. I am suggesting this for AFTER the new uro acclimates. The acclimation may be difficult enough on the little guy without throwing the rest at him.
Just another thought.

See mine likes to sleep a lot. They share the basking area and they only eat together, they don't like eating at different times. They're real good buddies. If one's not eating the other will go first, and that will entice the secone one to eat.

So there is no real problem with either. Apollo likes worms more then crickets, and Ares likes crickets more then worms, so they even it out. So both eat some of each same with greens.
