"DESIGNER PETS"_________POSTED ON AOL NEWS TODAY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

JaredHorenstein Aug 20, 2004 08:23 AM

I was siging on to AOL today and I saw this..........very cool..so I figured id post it up so you all can check it out....

"Some of the most sought after designer snakes are the various morphs of Ball Pythons, non-venomous natives of central and western Africa. For many animal lovers there's nothing like the feeling of having these muscular, serpentine bodies draped over their shoulders.

Snake breeders have nurtured many new varieties of Ball Pythons and other snakes by selecting for unusual colors or patterns. Breeders use "genetic engineering to create animals not found in the wild," says John Martino of R.M.J. Reptiles in Hewitt, N.J.

Wild Pythons kill by constriction, but in captivity their owners usually feed them pre-killed mice or, for the bigger ones, rats. Adult male Balls are about five-feet long; females grow larger, but rarely get beyond six feet. Ball Pythons can live upwards of 40 years.

Special color and pattern characteristics can add thousands of dollars to the price of these cold-blooded pets. A platinum, pewter, or Mojave Ball Python may sell for as much as $50,000, according to Martino."

Thought this was cool to see on AOL.

Anyway...have a great one!!!!

Is anyone else bothered by the term "genetic engineering" instead of "selective breeding"? The two terms might be interchangeable to many people, but to folks that understand their definitions they might get upset by breeders "fooling with nature." Just a thought.

It does make it seem like we're in our mad scientist labs with test tubes, doesn't it? Now where'd I put my fetal cells?

hope never will use genetic engineering to create new designer balls. The proper term would have been "selective breeding." And the draping over the shoulder thing??? How many of you do that with a ball? LOL

Oh well... it seems like every snake article I read has some form of misinformation in it.

Thanks for sharing Jared... that was interesting.

When can we get some good press on these being something that is not going to kill everyone in "Borneo" and can be great pets "In the hands of a more dedicacted individual." Instead of the wild animal...unpredictable...tempered creature. My ball pythons finally got some good points to the public but the rest of my collection shall remain illegal in most states. This girl is the most docile of anything I keep. Oh well...can't have everything.
