PLEASE HELP! dragon with a little foam coming out of her mouth, already had 2 cycles of baytril??? help!

Jason_Couch Aug 20, 2004 10:04 AM

She has steadily lost weight since I got her about a year ago. Shows no interest in crickets lately, only greens and pellets. She had a cough and was treated with baytril, then it came back and she went through another cycle of baytril. The vet doesn't know what to do and wants to have x-rays and bloodwork done but doesn't seem to be very knowledgable. Please tell me what I should do? She just finished her second cycle of baytril 3 days ago and she has foam on the side of her mouth this morning. I don't know what to do, she was getting .02 cc of baytril for 10 days for each cycle. I want to do what is best for her, please advise.

Do you have a good reptile vet in your area? Either that, or do get xrays and bloodwork. Sounds to be something serious. She has been losing weight since you got her? That is not a good sign. Please keep us updated.

You definately need a qualified reptile vet. See if this website can help you locate one near you. I had really good success with it when trying to find a vet for my chameleon 3 years ago, and I've used the same vet ever since.

Good luck.

run this past your vet first
give her some antihistamines and try another antibiotic.
you can find liquid benedryl at the drug store and give her 1 drop for every 50 grams of weight

Frothing can occur when the alveoli of the lungs or the trachea/esophagus passage are irritated and baytril has a history of that when the animal or person is allergic to it.

*this is not my info but comes from a reliable source.

I will do that, can you suggest another antibiotic? My vet only has a reptile book that she looks at, and other than that doesn't seem very knowledgable. Before I treated her with baytril she caughed but didn't have foam, now no cough and foam. Thank you very much for your advice, I really appreciate it! Please give all the instructions and info you can. Thanks again

once again this is from my source and I am passing it along.

Any of the sulfa based drugs can be used for reptiles that react to Baytril/Cirpo

Dr Jacobson or any of the staff at the Small Animal & Exotic Hospital at Univ of Gainesville will gladly take a call from a vet and advise on dosing and meds option

Small Animal Clinical Sciences (352) 392-4700 ext. 5700
Small Animal Clinical Sciences Fax Line (352) 392-6125
Small Animal Clinic (352) 392-4700 ext. 4700
UF College of Veterinary Medicine (352) 392-4700

If she has already been on full rounds of meds, upping hydration and temps will help a recovering animal with URI and also help flush the meds from her system. you should take her back into the vet to have the lungs checked that they are clear and not developed into a bubbler pneumonia though. ALthought baytril can cause the foaming and I think that is probably the cause, having her lungs checked that they are clear is safetly measure

I can't find a vet on either of those lists in my area, closest one is 100 miles away. Thanks for helping everyone!
