Growing up to fuzzies?

crtoon83 Aug 20, 2004 10:12 AM

I have two baby tx bairds I just got, they're both approx 10 inches long right now. I am looking at ordering some mice and I was wondering if they would be growing large enough to soon start eating fuzzies...maybe if i fed them more often like every 2-3 days? (I have heard that if you feed them every 2 days they will get large enough for breeding in 2 years...I don't want that it's just that I have 2 yearlings eating fuzzies and I would really like to get them all on the same size rodent as soon as possible). Right now the yearlings are getting one fuzzy every 4 days. I'm looking at ordering some pinkies for the two babies...should I order a bag of 50 or 100? (i want to get enough to last them until they can eat a bigger mouse...maybe one bag of small pinkies one bag of lg ones?)

I appreciate it. Thanks
-Chris

I'm not a huge fan of "power feeding" but you can get them to breeding size if you push them within two years. My recommendation is to feed them once every 5-7 days one prey item that is the same size as the largest diameter of their body. Many folks may disagree with this as they want faster growth, but I don't mind waiting an extra year to breed if it means I'll get two or three years more breeding success in the long run with healthier breeder snakes to show for it. So if it were me, I'd order that bag of 100 pinkies and keep them on those a little longer. In the worst case scenerio you may be feeding multiple pinkies to them for the last few feedings in the bag if they out grow the pink mice faster than you run out of them.

They're not going to be breeders...maybe just once for experimentation on my part...but thats not their purpose. I just want to let them to grow a little faster so that all my snakes will be eating the same size mice...or is this realistically not something that will be done until they are all fully grown on adult mice?

at 10" they are IMO to small to eat even small fuzzies...they might be able to handle eatting 'peaches' which are pinkies just starting to get hair and are a little bit larger then newborn pinks...I usually try fuzzies at 15 inches in length..Just remember the rule, dont feed anything larger then the widest girth of the snake and you'll be OK.
