Black Rat Snake Collection.

cornatus Aug 20, 2004 11:26 AM

Hi all.
Just wanted to know, with the proper permits of course. When is the best time to collect Black rat snake neonates? I plan to take a trip to Kentucky by the end of this month.
Thanks

collect..you mean catch them wild? The late afternoon/early evening is when the gray rats seem most active down here in florida, however i'm unsure of kentucky. I strongly would urge you, however, don't collect any full grown adults. On top of the parasite problems, you're taking an animal who has spent its whole life in the wild and putting it in a small tank can drive it crazy, and personally I think it's unethical. A baby snake...if caught young enough...wont know the difference really between the wild and a cage and can grow to be a very nice captive pet. Also helps out with the whole inbreeding problem.

My 2 cents.

2) Neonate Black Rat snake (Het for Lic Stk's) - Frankie

This should be a good month for black snake hatching. Look around logs in the woods. Just take your time and be carefull baby copperheads and blacks rats look a like (or so I have heard) except the copperhead has a yellow on it`s tail. I agree the younger you catch the snake the better off you are.
