Digging Dragon

Joeycoco98 Aug 20, 2004 12:30 PM

Hell to all the read and reply to this. I have two dragons, 1 male and 1 female (I think). The one that I thinks is a male loves to dig in his subtrate and make small caves to sleep in. Is this normal behavior? I have not read anything that talks about digging habits. Just curious.

Males don't often burrow.. but if the substrate is deep enough, yah it's normal and fine.

Thanks for the reply. I just finish checking the cage and sure enough the Beardie has gone back to his/her burrow to sleep.

Thanks,

How old are these dragons? Are you sure about the sexes?

I ask because 2 males cannot house together, and if you house a male and female together, they better be at least 18 months old because they will breed, and breeding before 18 months is bad for both dragons.

So unless they are both female, they had better be over 18 months old, and you had better be ready for lots of babies. If they are two males, or m/f under 18 months, they should be separated promptly.

Thanks for the warnings. At what age are they able to breed? These are babies I would imagine not more than a three months old but can't be sure. They are about 5 inches from tip of snout to tip of tail. While I am not opposed to babies, obviously I would not want them to breed before it is safe/good for them to breed. The get along fine and share there basking rock, there does not appear to be any hostility at all

they become sexually mature at 5-6 months although they should not breed before 18. therefore you should be prepared to separate them into individual tanks no later than 6 months. another concern is if they are related - if you got them from the same petstore / breeder its highly likely (unles specified) that they are siblings. under no circumstances whatsoever must you allow siblings to breed - inbreeding is very bad, especially amongst bearded dragons where the gene pool is already limited.

however, they are young, so enjoy the next 3 months before you worry about this. not trying to lecture you, only trying to help. good luck.

Some seem to enjoy digging. I have two that will "dig" in the newspaper at the bottom of their cages and tear it to bits, so I put little sandboxes in for them to play in. I have others who don't dig at all. It does seem to be mostly the females who are such ardent diggers, but I do have one male that does it.

I "ditto" the post below about separating them if they are young and/or you are not prepared for babies.

Best,
Michele

Thanks for the info. I think I will build him/her a sandbox.
