Moisture Concerns.

shanna Aug 20, 2004 01:34 PM

Spike has just recently shed his skin (again) and it has left me pretty concerned. His spikes are not only curled over (not just hanging to one side but actually curled), and the largest ones closest to his head are split a little at the tips and generally are looking dry and sad. I have increased his water intake by adding (not substituting) some moisture intense foods in his diet like watermelon and cucumber. I spray him with water relatively frequently as well (which he tolerates suprisingly well). I'm wondering if I should get him a humidifier and leave it on during the day. I don't give him a daily bath anymore but will occasionally.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Shanna and Spike
PS If I have some time later I'll post some pictures of his spikes.

Could there be retained sheds on his crest? Bathe him, and pour water over his back for several minutes, then when you're done, rub a little moisturizing lotion onto his spines. Hopefully that will allow retained sheds to slip off.

I'm pretty sure all the old skin has come off. I'll try to post a picture to show what I mean.

Thanks,
Shanna
