Day gecko/UVB question

ivegotabike Aug 20, 2004 01:39 PM

okay, I was reading a care-sheet on day geckos, since I intend on getting one, and it said that some of the top breeders and hobbyists don't use UVB lighting, rather they use clacium supplement with D3 in it.... i've heard this before, and, don't get me wrong, i understand UVA is also good to have, but if UVB produces vitamins, the more important of which is d3, then couldn't you substitute costly UVB lights with affordable vitamin powder and seperate calcium powder that had D3 in it? I mean, I plan on using UV tubes anyway, but has anyone here and any succes with powder sans light?

There are many that drive down this road. I am against this and here is my 2 cents. In the wild, animals exposed to high amounts of UVB lighting can contain insane D3 levels as compared to captives and make the most out of their calcium (tests have shown that wild iguanas for example have I believe as much as 6 times the amount). However, it is very well known that overdosing with actual D3 vitamin will cause problems in your pet. The reason for this I believe is that there is a step before the actual D3 production that most people dont know about. If you read into this topic thoughrouly you will see that its not as easy as adding D3 to the diet. Overall, I believe that UVB calcium some D3 works best.
