having a hard time with my humidity

rc_racer_007 Jun 24, 2003 03:03 PM

ok now that my tank is planted im trying to get my temp and humidity steady. i can see my soil is moist, and i am misting 3 minutes on every hour (well 8am-8pm and 3 minutes at 1 am). my humidity with stay 95% for 20 minutes after misiting then fall to 75%-low 80s before the hour is over. i have my fans on all the time (except for when it mists, im going to cut the time it works down. but do you all have any ideas what the problem might be?

i have weather striping on the lid which gives it a allmost air tight fit. the only place where air would get out is the fan openings and the mister holes which a peice of pvc has been force fitted in.

thanks

Have you tried with the fans off completely? Maybe even occlude the fan openings for a day or two and see what it does to the humidity...I know nothing about frogs but it seems to me that if you have fans blowing air into the tank it will dry up the tank pretty quick...just an idea

well im still going to run them for a little bit every hour. cause i have air plants and they love moving air and moving air helps reduce mold. but im going outta town this thursday so ill try it with the fans off and at a reduced time period and see what happens.

any other ideas?

Hi Racer,
Sorry, I did not mean to occlude everything forever but just a day or two as a test to see if the humidity would go up...

On my Luec tank I only run my fan for 3 mins each hour. It is enough to keep the glass from fogging up adn to keep the humidity up. Now on my Azureus tank I run a very small fan all the time the lights are on, but that tank has a pool and waterfall.

I never had any luck blowing a fan into my tanks or exhausting them. It dropped the humidity to what ever the room was within a few minutes. That's because you will get a complete change of air within a few minutes. You may want to try getting an adjustable transformer on the fan and adjust the fan speed. Just make sure you use a digital humidity gauge, the analog types are to slow to respond to give an accurate reading when using fans.

ya i have a digi humidit guage and i have my fans set at their lowest setting. well i changed it last night to where my fan kicks on 4 minutes after misting for 5 minutes every hour. normally at X:30 (ex* 8:30 but the hour doesnt matter), the humidity would be from 80-85% its still at high.

i was running my fans constantly for a about a week and the humidity stayed high, probibly had a lot of water in there. and i guess that explains something. the fan just have tried out the water because i have misted one gallon of water into my tank and in the false bottom there is nothing but little water droplets.
