2 leos with possible eye infections

kdigital Aug 20, 2004 03:51 PM

please help if you can!!!
2 of my leos seem to have eye infections that developed 2 days ago. each gecko's right eye appears to have some kind of secretion that has hardened and entirely encrusted the front of the eyeball. Per a suggestion from a local breeder/retailer I soaked the geckos. the encrusted mass turned to a slimy white "goo" when the lizards were soaked. The "goo" became hard again after the soaking. I recently moved from PA to Michigan last week, and for the time being, all my geckos are on paper towels. All 7 of my geckos survived the 12 hour drive and all but these 2 are thriving. I recently did purchase potting soil for their moist hides since they were eating the vermiculite I used to use. I switched to potting soil after the problem began. the sick animals are quarantined. Any thoughts, comments, or inquiries will be welcomed or apprerciated. Thanks.

Also what substrate do you use. if its loose it may have gotten in its eye. But take it to a vet if you can to make sure

I agree. Eye problems are scary, especially because infections can very easily take over the brain. You dont want that.

I just found out there are herp vets at MSU (Michigan State University). I will be contacting them tomorrow (if possible). I was really hoping to avoid the cost of the trip, but I'm getting a bit worried. Thanks for the advice.

Right now the leos are on paper towels, previously the leos were kept on artificial astroturf-type material (I've never had any problems with it, but got tired of everybody telling me it was no good). The hide box with potting soil used to be vermiculite. Do you think that it could be potting soil or vermiculite that caused the problem?

Unlikely because you mentioned your other leos are fine

try contacting the vet and asking them about it and see if they can help you. I understand it can be costly but you're doing the right thing by at least consulting a vet

Thanks again,

I will most likely be contacting MSU on Monday. In the meantime, each gecko ate 18 worms (roughly) last night and appear to behaving normally in their quarantine enclosures. Hopefully all goes well with the vet and I haven't waited too long. Thanks again!
