Update on Yellow Rat snake from Terry Parks.

sullman Aug 20, 2004 04:59 PM

I got a late 2003 yellow rat from Terry Parks on July 23rd this year. The little guy was about 14 3/4 inches long and looked like a little yellow pencil..lol..Very nice snake indeed!Anyway this guy ate right away after my wife put him in his enclosure! I would have waited to feed him but the wife gave him 2 pinkies which he gobbled up. I moved him up to small fuzzies and feed him 2 fuzzies on Saturdays and sometimes one during the middle of the week if he is out in hunt mode otherwise it's just the 2 every Saturday(Feeding day in my house). My wife goes to me,you know that little yellow snake is getting big,so I decided to get a measurement of him and since July 23rd,the day I got him,he grew about 2 inches in length! He shed right after I got him and shed again sometime last week.

I swear I think the pet store here puts something in the mice..lol.. My Cali King was 16 inches when I got him in late April early May and is now a little over 29 inches long and I only feed these guys once a week! Granted I do feed them more then one mouse per sitting. My corn I feed usually 1-2 adult mice. My king I usually feed either 3-4 fuzzies or 2-3 hoppers and the yellow I feed or 2 fuzzies and maybe one during the week since he is a little guy and needs more then the other two snakes. He also got a little more girth to him. He is still a little skittish when I pick him up and I don't handle him for more then 5 mins total a day .. he is starting to settle down a little .. he frails around a lot but never struck at me or musked yet...

I'll take some pictures this weekend if I can!

I also have some of Terry's 03 Yellows. They came to me last year in great health and have stayed that way. They are great looking snakes. I will post pictures some time soon.

I have a question for you. Have yours started to form the stripe pattern yet? I am still waiting for mine to start to change.

Do you feed yours live or F/T? Mine are on F/T and are doing great. They do like it better if I move the mouse around a bit for them.

Good luck with your Yellow. Terry does sell good quality stock. He seem to be a nice gut too. (LOL)

Here's a pic of one of the parents. The 03' babies are the pairs first clutch. The are late 03' babies. The clutch was laid about the time most double clutchers are laying the second clutch. Since the 03 babies are the first clutch, I don't have any refernce as to how long the yellows will take to make their transition. I would think they would begin shortly. Keep me updated on any progress as I have another clutch incubating right now. Again this clutch was the last laid of all my clutches.

No,he has shown no signs of pattern change but like I said I just got him in July. My escaped yellow rat started showing signs of pattern change around a year old. I started seeing faint stripes along his back and sides and his saddles started to fade a little. He started to show high yellow colors under his neck and body.I still look for him in my house but he has been gone since June!

I am expecting that sometime in the spring the yellow from Terry will start to show pattern changes. Every snake is different though and I have seen some adult yellows that still have visible signs of saddles.I did manage to take some pictures but now my scanner is giving me some issues..lol. I need to get another digital camera!
