You have bothing at all to worry about, I keep mine in uncovered rubbermaids.
do you have any good things that I should know??? I am new to the whole "silk worm" thing and would liek to find out from someone that has kept them! THANKS ERIk
Don't try to feed them anything but chow or mullberry leaves. Learned that by giving them some romaine. They pretty much crapped themselves to death.
Silkworms probably could climb out of plastic containers but they just don't bother. I have always kept my silks in paper coffee cup takeout trays, sitting ontop of the lid of a rubbermaid container. the only time I had a silkworm 'escape' was when I had kept a temperature probe to make sure the silkworms weren't gettting to cold/hot during the winter. One decided to climb the wire from the digital thermometer up and then down the container onto the floor. It was still on the floor when I found it.
They should be kept in a dry well ventilated container as they are quick to die when exposed to mold or bacteria. Dump their poop once a day to keep it from getting moldy, especially if it's humid in your house. Feed them either mulberry leaves, or silkworm chow. Temperatures are fine at room temperature, 70-80F is good. That's about it for care.
