Redfoot beginner

I just acquired a 2 week old female redfoot tort at the Daytona show. I am more of snake guy but my wife just had to have the little girl. What is the best substrate to keep her on? I am keeping her on paper towels right now. Do you think I could use cypress or would she ingest that? Also, about how many years does it take before they are sexually mature?

Welcome to the world of.. SLOW tortoises! Since these guys live f o r e v e r.. you may as well enjoy "her" being small.. because it's going to take awhile.

I've raised up Leopard tortoises and it took 6 years to grow from 4.5" to around 11"-12".. and those were the females of the group.. and I wonder if they grew too fast. I know my female Redfoot hatchlings grew too fast.. 10"-11" in 6 years also! Don't get in a hurry.. for the HEALTH of your tortoises.

I believe you should be able to start to maybe have some sort of a clue of their probable sex.. (get the idea) at somewhere between 6"-7".. that is if you have two to compare.. they can be tough!!

Reply directly for pics if you like.

I've raised my Leopards on plain Rabbit pellets.. the worst thing is they ingest it.. what is it made of anyway?

See these beautiful creatures at: WANNA SEE A NICE LEOPARD TORTOISE YOUNGSTER.. down the page. I'm still embarrassed at the number of "posts".. pics!!

2 week old female????? May I ask how on earth they know this young redfoot is female?

I am not 100% sure it is a female. The breeder incubated the eggs at higher temps. I would think that the odds are it's a girl.
