unveiling my 04 female pastel.....

serpentcity Aug 20, 2004 10:50 PM

In this forum people have inquired as to how young a male BP can be and still sire offspring.

I obtained an early July 03 hatched male pastel from Mark Petros in late July 03 and fed him well. By early January 04 he was over 700 gm. I cooled him to the low 70's through early February. I paired him with a virgin 3 year old light-colored female weighing about 2000 gm. The male bred this female twice,
when he was about 7.5 months old (20+ hour mating), and when he was about 8.5 months old (10+ hour mating). In the one month interval between matings they were paired up several times with no interest shown by the male.

On 3 June 04 the female laid 2 normal-sized fertile eggs, one partially-slugged but fertile egg, and 3 slugs. In late July the 2 good eggs hatched, and I slit the partially-slugged egg. The 2 good eggs contained a female pastel and normal male, and the partially-slugged egg contained a premee pastel female which did not survive.

PICS are of the pastel female. She's a keeper!!

At the early breeding age this male MAY have been producing a high percentage of abnormal or partially-formed spermatozoa, so this might account for the 50% infertile clutch by the female.

Thanks for looking!

I had an 03 male pastel breed at 480 grams....I have 20 more days on his clutch but he sired a 5 egg clutch laid on July 16th. All eggs candled good and are still good from what I can see. We will see what comes of these but it seems like a normal clutch of normal looking eggs and hopefully normal looking babies.

Thanks for the information. I'm looking at a very similar situation coming up this winter. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Hey Scott –

Thanks for the detailed account. You’ve got to figure that in the wild, these young little guys would rarely get past the big bruiser males for the right to mate. But its fun to see what’s within the realm of the physically possible.

Congrats on the hatchling! I have a Bell line pastel from Sept. 03 that was mated to a couple of females and two took, but produced 3 fertile eggs each from a total of seven and eight eggs deposited. I am not sure what is in them, but they are due to hatch in about a month. Since I have always bred with older males, this is also the first time I encountered infertile eggs. The male bred was 8mnths old and 620g and began copulation almost immediately after sperm plugs were discovered and removed. Prior to this, he did not perform at all. I love this experimentation!
