Pacman Frog questions

KenW Aug 21, 2004 09:06 AM

I've been reading this forum and found an article on Pacman frogs in an old issue of Reptiles magazine but I still have a few questions.

1. How loud are the calls of the males? Do they just call at night? Do females call?

2. A variety of prey items is generally recommended but I'd like to know if superworms can be used as a staple diet?

3. How successful are no-substrate setups?

4. How often do Pacman frogs defecate? Would I be cleaning up every other day? every week? every month?

Thanks in advance. As someone with no experience with these creatures, I want to hear from experienced keepers to help me decide if this animal would be a suitable pet for me.

cant answer all of ur questions, think mines is a female and never heard another one call and i use substrate. i woulfd imagine the substrate that allows burrowing will make the frog feel more secure

as for defacations, mines is about once a week maybe longer, and no u cannot use supers as a staple diet they are to fatty and i would also have concers about the indigestible chitin exoskeleton they have impacting the frog if fed in large numbers

hope this helps, sure others will comment on the other questions

I agree about the substrate absolutely being needed for the mental health of your frog. As for food I feed mine gutloaded dusted crickets mainly along with feeder fish, wax worms, earthworms, and ocassionally a pinky mouse to give him some variety. I have one pac-man, that is a male. He doesn't call often but when he does he will give out a couple of calls and that will be all. As for deficating he goes about once a week or week and a half. Once I notice he has deficated I scoop it out of his tank or wash out his water dish.
