taming a rescued iguana???

mr_phew Aug 21, 2004 12:46 PM

Greetings. About 1 1/2 years ago I rescued an iguana from a neighbor who skipped town...to Canada. He left his iguana and someone called animal control to have it exterminated. Well, I couldn't have that so I took him in. He was pretty thin when I got him/her but over time she's doing excellent. I have her in a custom built cage (that I used to house my red-tail boa in). I have no idea of how old she is...she has just recently started having big growth spurts...
anyway, my question is: Can she be tamed still? When I take her out of her enclosure, she fights pretty hard, but she'll often do the "I'll just close my eyes" routine, which allows me to hold her for a bit, but then she'll get restless and try to fight (not very aggressively, more just to get loose).
Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated... (my iguana loves to watch my snapping turtles and my dogs...it's hilarious how interested she is.

Thanks again. -phew

Yes, Iguanas can bet tamed as adults. In most cases the only difference it that their bite is dangerous relative to a juvenile, so the human has to be way more careful and smart about it. In your case, it seems your ig is already well on the way to being tamed. If she were starting fresh, she would fiercely fight you.

Taming is a big topic for e-mails, so if you don't mind, there is a very good article on taming:

It's a PDF file. Scroll down to the socialization part.
