confused about this guyana "PICS"

koky6869 Aug 21, 2004 12:55 PM

this male came in from guyana.. in a large shipment of boas over a year ago.. hes about 2 1/2 to 3 feet .. in my opinion though he looks nothing like any guyana im used to having and seeing.. his top side is bright yellow and his sides are not pink but a reaaaaaaaally bright orange :S .. imo he looks more like a surinam .. but he "DID" come from guyana.. could this be one of those few that are crossing over ? lol .. i really dont care what he is.. i just would love to hear what you guys have to say and have any of you guys ever had a guyana similar to this .. thanks

Surinames and Guyanas border each other as far a locality goes, so they will look like one another sometimes. Both have awesome coloration. Guyanas typically have more purples, while Suri's typically have alot more orange/pink coloration. Hope this helps.

Why would you think that there is a difference between the two? There is no barrier between them and therefore no isolation. There is no merit in the way hobbyists divide them into country of origins from a scientific standpoint, they should be divided into groups based on morpholagical and/or behavioural differences (scale counts, general colour and pattern, genetics, reproduction such as litter sizes, and other noticable differences). What happens if a countries border is changed? Obviously more research is needed to more accurately seperate locales but the fact is that we're talking about the same sub-species here. Perhaps :french guyaname would be more appropriate.... Just a thought

Regaurdless of, if someone thinks they are the same or they are different, the artificial border has created a locality. Suriname is surrounded by Guyana. Guyanan boas will have the greatest amount of genetic diversity since these boas get the most influence from Brazil and Venezeula. Some Surinames will express traits of Guyanans, and vice-versa. However, a mold has been built for each locality- and breeders of these boas should try to stick to that. The whole point of creating localities is to create an archetypical boa from which all others can be judged.
