Male mice do have a strong odor, male rats don't. Petstores can be an ok source to get mice/rats to start a breeding colony but make sure you get young mice/rats that are sold as pets and that they look healthy. A healthy mouse/rat should be active, inquisitive and cleared eyed. Their fur should be completely clean without any clinging poo or dirt as mice are naturally clean. They only get dirty if over crowded and/or in dirty cages.
