My experience cohabitation male and female-Can you explain problem?

REX_PAT Aug 21, 2004 02:56 PM

Hello! My first message on a forum. Sorry, English is not my first langage... I hope you will understand my uro's story!!!

I bought an uro mali male in january 2004. He went very well (eat a lot and was very big). In march 2004, I bought a female mali uro. I put together but they start to fight. The male start to bit the female tail. The male run to the female and she doesn't like that. The male do some "wind" with him.

The fight began to slow down one week and a haft later but the male try again to bite the neck of the female. The male was the King of the terrarium.

You know, in fact, I'am not sure it's a male and a female. I think it is in fonction of their comportement!

In mid of april, the male start to go bad. He turn around himself. Often, He look the top of the terrarium and he stop to eat and to stay at a warmer place in terrarium. He had a very wierd comportement and He ''panic'' when he was in a warmer place. I went to the vet and He prescribe ''antibiotique'' by injection for ten days. I never saw improvement. He died in mid-May! Do you know that comportement? Do you why he was scick?

The female goes well but I was not sure if she was gravid? Is it easy to see if a female is gravid? Now, maybe she was not gravid because she goes well and it pass 4 months after the male is separate from the female!!!

I have some picture and numeric video but my internet is very slow. If you want to see my picture or video, I can try to send it if you want...

I hope you understand my "English"!

I have to admit, you lost me on some of those words. It's difficult to tell from the picture, but at first it looks like two males. I could be wrong, but they seem a bit colorful to be a female. Also, is one of those the male that died? And currently, you only have one?

Without an acclimation time or quarantine time, there's more than one possiblity as to why the loss (sorry, by the way). It's possible that the second uro had an existing problem before you got him/her. Also, I'd acclimate any new uro to the new enviroment before introducing to another.

MAybe someone with more medical experience can shed some more light on it.

Sorry about my words....

Yes the uro at the right of the picture is died.

So, I have only one uro now.

I Think it's a male and a female because one try to breed with the other one. Is it a good reason to be sure it was a male and a female???

Now, this is the cage of my uro's

look the tale... Wath is the sex of Rex and Roxy (uro mali)

From the looks of it you had two males, the large femoral pores and the bulges at the base of the tail would indicate this. Although the one on the right it's difficult to get a good look at the tail. Sounds like it may have died from parasites. Not unusual for Malis to have them and most of the time they won't kill them but the introduction of the other Mali may have been enough to stress the first one out. But I'm not a vet although I do play one on T.V.

Thanks for you suggestion. I will do in the future.

The uro who dead was alone for 3 months (in the same cage). Is it enough for an acclimation time or quarantine time? But I put directly the new uro with him. I will never do this in the future...

For proper quarantine, each uro should have a separate tank and not be in direct contact with each other for 2-3 months. Isis (my female mali) is currently living in a 40-gallon Rubbermaid tub while Ra (my male mali) is living in his 40-gallon breeder tank. I will introduce her to Ra at the end of September.

I hope this helps

By the way, is your first language French by any chance?

Yes, I do speak French.

sunfox Aug 22, 2004 03:11 PM

Yes, I also speak French as it is my first language. If you have any trouble translating something, you can email me and I can translate it for you if you'd like.

Also, if you're looking for another mali uro, a guy on here named Jobi might be able to tell you where you can get some in Canada.

I hope this helps.
