My experience with this Boa birth-

Roe Aug 21, 2004 03:29 PM

I posted pics of my Surinam litter yesterday. I've learned a bit from this birth--- for one, my female had a slight lull in feeding early on, but then ate as regularly as any other time. She had her last meal-- a medium sized rat-- three days before this birth. I hope that means she will recover more quickly from the experience. I've heard that it is more typical for a snake to stop eating altogether late in the process...since this animal maintained an appetite, I thought she might throw a bunch of slugs at me.

Second- I had no idea that a new Boa mom becomes so protective and aggressive. I removed the babies yesterday while she was birthing and had little problem. However, she is now extremely wary and alert, and has struck the glass of her cage a couple of times when I've been looking at her. I somehow managed to remove most of the goopy newspaper and the last slug from the cage, so perhaps she'll calm down as the odor goes away. She has always been a very tame snake.

A couple more photos...yes, it is easy to get carried away with all this-
All the best-
Jim Lineberger

I almost got bit when I removed babies. I even had a BCI this year give me some slugs and she was very protective of thoese too.

After birth it is best to remove the mom and clean the entire cage and if possible give her a bath to remove all (or as much as possible) of the smell of the birth as you can. This will help her to return to normal feeding. Should help her to calm down too. Hope this helps.

I can't think of many things that would make me happier than to see what you've got right there.

Good work!
