How late is too late???

dmac77 Aug 21, 2004 04:46 PM

How late is too late to try and get a female to do a second clutch? My female snow corn has been pounding mice and is swelling it looks like, and I was wondering if it was too late to try for a second clutch this year... (first time breeder, so not sure).

Thanks for the input.

Dave.

when was first laid?

when did they hatch?

usually second is laid as first is hatching.....

60 day to lay 60 day to hatch........

if she laid awhile ago......still could maybe......

been too long?....wait till next year......

she should lay second even if you don't breed for it...if she wants to...

I got at least that laid 3 this year now....alot of duds...I didn't breed for it......

They can lay two clutches from one mating, so she may be gravid if you can feel eggs.

You could try mating her again anyway, but you might have trouble getting a male "interested" this late in the season. Can't hurt to try (I did once have an odd clutch appear one December).

Either way, double clutching doesn't seem to be related to how much a female is fed; either she will double-clutch or she won't. If she's a single-clutcher, then extra food won't prompt her to go for a second clutch.
