too big of a cricket

mr_president Aug 21, 2004 05:51 PM

yesterday i bought small sized crickets from my local petstore. i put them in the little critter container for later and left. when i fed my beardy today i just took the egg carton piece that they gave and shook it over his tank. there were a couple unusually big ones. he ate them no problem. i sat with him for about 20 minutes after i saw him eat the big ones and he seemed fine. i heard things about hind leg paralysis if theyre food it too big. is ther any chance my little guy could get it? if he does what do i do and can it go away?

Rear leg paralyses doesn't happen every time a large cricket gets eaten, but certainly good to be more careful not avoid feeding insects bigger than the space between their eyes. If your bearded dragon is fine now, then there isnt' much to worry about. If he does start to show some rear leg paralysis, keeping him warm so he can digest helps. Also regular baths to help get things to pass helps as well. Extreme cases will need a vet's care.
