How do you disinfect wood...

alebron Aug 21, 2004 07:40 PM

I'm getting rid of these beautiful pieces of wood from my fish tank, but the only problem was they were staining the color of the water, and eventhough they were treated to be water proof, some water sneaked in. So now i allowed them to dry, but what should i do to disinfect it.
Also in the water their has been many chemicals for the fish, and to treat the water. Would boiling this breakdown chemicals, and kill bacteria. I don't want these wood pieces to go to waste

i begin by scrubbing the wood with a steel wire brush to remove anything on the surface. then i mix a water/bleach solution and let the wood soak overnight. then, i swap the solution out with pure water, letting the wood soak one night at a time, changing the water every night. time consuming without a doubt, but it has never failed me in the past

im not too accurate, i usually just eyeball it, but 5% sounds fine.

I have another wood question. My parents just went camping somewhere in the mountains and they brought me back some nice pieces of wood. One of the pieces still has mosses growing on it. I was wondering if i should scrape off all the moss and disinfect it. I real dont want to have to do this b/c the wood looks awsome, but i will if i have to.
Thanks,
Josh

While its possible nothing bad will happen. Cresteds are not native to this country .You can not be sure that there is nothing in the wood and or moss that wont affect him in a negative way . Equally unfortunate is what happens when a insect colony moves indoors from your wood.
Its usually a very good idea to make sure you dont have any unwanted guests
Some people use a mild bleech wash, most bake it in the oven,in addition I seal the wood in poly myself after I clean it. That helps alot for cleaning.

Im guessing that i should probley kill the moss then.
i dont think that i would want to seal it though b/c once i get some of my own moss in there it would be cool if grew onto the wood. So how do i go about killing and getting rid of the moss?
Thanx
