Looking for the sweetest lizard in town

Bottledpet Aug 22, 2004 04:02 AM

I have a 3 foot blackthroat monitor, so thats got my manly, macho side covered. Eatting live prey, etc... What I want now is jsut a sweetheard of a lizard, that will chill with you. So far im thinking Plated. My buddy has a sudan plated, and hes great. Nicest lizard ive ever known. However, i was also looking for something differant. But, i want a lizard to take out, and let him chill with you. Relax on my while i watch TV, or get the mail (and yes, i do have a leash if im going outside with it). I basically want a Lapcat-Lizard. Water dragons, Anoles, Iguanas.. Out of the question. One thing I liek about Capone, the Plated, is that he doesnt try to run away. my last iguana killed himself. i handled him dialy, and he diddnt dislike me, but he would randomly try to jump..... To the Moon. He would focus on objects across the room, and jsut take a flying leap, about a foot out, and 6 feet down. Also, he tries to run too, just like my old water dragon. I gave him to another friend, becasue i couldnt handle him. He was nice to me, 100%.. but he was too quick, and liked to bolt when we were watching tv and such. I cant go chacing these guys all the time..

ANYHOW... Im looking for a calm, docile, relaxed, well mannered, slow, good old lizard. Im not worried about size.. i would like a big lizard, preferrably, but as long as hes not gonna bolt, a smaller lizard would be accepted.

This is kinda sounding like you want a lizard just to be "cool" and this is the wrong reason to get a herptile. But don't get me wrong I wanted to get a snake just to be cool and then because my mom said no, so I found alternatives in lizards. Then I fell in love with the hobby. I just hope that you actually like the lizards besides just to be cool, for thier sake. For you I would reccomend a leopard gecko(maybe a tremper giant if you want a 11 inch gecko?) or a bearded dragon. If you want something big, extremely laid back, and handelable get a blue tongue skink. They would also eat a few things your tegu does so you wouldn't have to bother with too many insects. A blue tongue may cost a bit more overall but they sound like they would match your description of your new lizard perfectly.

Nice pic. Must be Don, the Indo. I have 1 to and expecting to get a female for him in a few months ahead. I highly recommend them. The easterns seems to be more docile than the others, but any type would be a great pet.

If you were REALLY macho you'd be killing and eating mice yourself, and not hiring a smaller animal to do it for you.
