eek new baby columbian rainbow escaped!

somegirl Jun 24, 2003 05:20 PM

bought her saturday, she ate a pinkie last night. went to check on her today and no snake! the lid wasnt really snug, but it was held down with heavy books so im not sure how she got out, especially cause the cage is tall and she's still tiny. mental note: dont buy babies again :P
im gonna cry looking around my room, under bookshelves and such but no snakey. luckily, i dont *think* she'll get downstairs because the steps are open. but i could very well be wrong. i dont have time to be snake hunting right now! im afraid of what'll happen if my roommate's cats find her first...

this is what i get for naming her Lucifer

did you check under the substrate?

somegirl Jun 24, 2003 07:08 PM

yeah. i had her on papertowels so confirming she wasnt there was nice and easy

Look under the warmest spot. When my cornsnake got loose, i looked everywhere in the room...except under the aquarium stand. Lukily it was on a rolling stand, so I just rolled it out and there he was! Look under everything. A good trick is to put a human heat pad on low and place it in the middle of the room. Snakes always search for a heat spot when they get cold. Best of luck.

i was thinking of trying that. will they come if its just in the open or do i need to hide it a bit?
was also thinking of just leaving a couple pinkies out tomorrow night. last night, the sqealing woke me up when she ate

Lol that may work,,but the cat will eat the mice first,,i would just look everywhere untill i found it,,check the bath room under sinks everywhere, behind the frige,,,Greg

yeah i keep looking. i put the heat pad on the floor in a semi-hidden spot. i can kick the cats out overnight to see if the pinkies attract her if she's still in my room. as long as she stays upstairs she's gotta turn up eventually...i think. im still trying to figure out how she got out at all. so frustrating!

Look under your refrigerator. Or just follow the wall adjacent to her tank. Thats how I found my rubber boa who escaped a few days ago.

Boas like to stick to the wall as they crawl, rather than crawl across open spaces. Just gotta "Think like a boa" to find them.

i checked behind my bookshelves and in my drawers (my dresser is next to her tank). have to keep checking back i guess. i put her heating pad under a cart near her cage, hopefully that will attract little Lucifer. and if not, ill boot the cats out and leave her some pinkies tomorrow night.

im guessing ill find her when my roommate wakes up with a little boa on his pillow

Check really well under the dresser and where the drawers rest in the back- pull all drawers out so you can see the inside. Depending on how the dresser is constructed, sometimes there's a gap underneath the bottom drawer. Can you tell I've taken mine apart a few times? I haven't "lost" any snakes in years (knock on wood), but remember the dresser being a veritable jungle gym for a small python. The books on the screen top trick didn't work for me either. I had a 6 foot snake push a screen top up that had 5 bricks stacked on it! Clips are a good investment.
Good luck and keep looking!

Keep these simple rules in mind...

1) like previously mentioned, follow the walls.. they'll be close to the walls 9 out of 10 times. NOTE - * they CAN and WILL climb anything attached to the wall *

2) check behind stuff, meaning I frequently find them sandwiched between the wall and the bookshelf, AGAINST the wall - not the floor! about 3 feet up off the floor...

3) I have ALWAYS found them in the least likely place I would think - the last place I would even think of checking, instead of the places that seemed logically right to me..lol

4)many times they are close to home - very close to their cage. they don't tend to go far, just look for a good hide spot.

5) if you have rack systems (i have boaphile racks) they'll tend to go behind the tubs close to the heat source

hope you find him!

thanks, Joe Rollo

I had three brazilian babies in one tank and all escaped.
One I found in the bathroom around the shower handles in the early evening about 1 week after they escaped. The other two never showed up. I looked everywhere and TORE APART my apartment. I moved the fridge, the sotve, the diswasher and ever uprooted some cabinets. I left live mice out as bait, I left the apartment cold with the tank open a bit so they could get back to a hot humid environment but no snakes... Good luck you will need it.
