Breeding Chameleons

DJXMASTERCHIEF Jun 24, 2003 05:21 PM

I was wondering if you needed a permit to breed and sell chameleons, and if you mated a blue ambanja with a red ambanja, will some hatchlings be blue and red?

thanks for your time.

In the US, there are not many areas that impose such restrictions, but you can check your state's game or fish & wildlife website for animal regulations. I am sure the rules vary from state to state, but normally non-venomous lizards are not heavily restricted. Some amphibians are not permitted in some states - for fear it will upset the natural balance of that area's eco system - best to check those regulations.

If you breed 2 ambanjas - you will generate more ambanjas. Most ambanjas have both blue and red vertical barring - however some breeders have managed to have one or the other as the dominate - therefore "blue-bar or red-bar" has appeared in descriptions. There are a few ambanjas out there that have only one color of vertical barring however. With the female panthers being so hard to truly tell as to their locale heritage, one would need to see brothers of the same clutch to be sure she is truly a red-bar ambanja female. Even in the same clutch, different females can carry different coloration genes.

Here is one of our ambanja males - he is not either distinction. Worse case scenario - you would get something like this.
