hatchling not basking??

gavinclews Aug 22, 2004 12:11 PM

I transfered my new hatchlings into their viv today from the incubator but they wont eat or even bask. They just run around or sleep on the bottom of the cage. Is this normal? I have a plate of fresh chopped kale and have bought some tiny crickets but they arent interested. All they are thinking about is escaping. Is this normal?? I have made a lovely basking spot for them at 110 - 115 but they arent bothered about it. Also when i mist them they go mad and run off.

Actually, this sounds pretty normal to me. Most of the time, my hatchlings won't eat for a day or so. Some of them won't eat their greens for a week. Another thing to consider is that they've only been out of the egg for a day or two. At this point, they don't understand the concept of being caged, nor do they know that you're not a predator. Sounds like you've got the basking temps right. Just continue what you're doing, and give them time to adjust. I use a spray bottle & lightly mist my hatchlings several times a day. This way, they learn to drink from the water running down their face.
Hope this helps,
Cricket
