feeding baby dragons

five-o Aug 22, 2004 01:51 PM

As far as feeding new beardies goes, I let him/her eat 3 times a day-about 5-10 small crix per feeding. Is this okay? It surprised me by eating greens already. It seems very healthy with one exception. Yesterday it looked very bloated several hours after eating. I soaked it in warm water, and it finally pooped this morning and it appears to be fine. I have heard babies sometimes have digestion problems. His basking spot is 110 deg, and the other elevated spot he has is 85-90. He always basks and drinks so why would he be bloated?

What are you measuring the temp with (what kind of thermometer)? The reason I ask is if babies get overheated sometimes they'll bloat up afterwards. We had the main thermostat that controls ambient (cool side) temp in our hatchling room go out once and it hit very high temps in there. They survived the initial temps but we lost about half the babies afterwards due to the bloating that resulted. Looong soaks in warm water are all that I've found that help.

I am using an exoterra thermometer which is mounted on his log where he lays. I always read babies need to be around 110 deg. Which is what my thermometer is measuring.

Is that the dial kind? If so they can be way off, like 20 degrees. I'd double check them with a digital or infrared.

Well at room temp it measures whatever my digital house thermostat, like 72-74 so I figured it was accurate.

I try not to but I can't help it sometimes. We've only had him a short time but he's already a part of the family. He is doing fine now. Thanks
