Pac burrowing and how this relates to feeding...question

needaurita Aug 22, 2004 03:43 PM

I felt that my pac needed more room to burrow so I added a lot of Bed-A-Beast and mixed it in with peat moss and boom I was right. My pac is now a couple inches into the mix, of which I am glad cause it shows he might have been a little scared or warm.

But then comes the problem: how do I feed a burrowed pac? I find that if I try to find him and then clear out a little area around his mouth he usually won't eat. He doesn't ever seem to want to eat if I have my hand in the tank (or if I had my hand in there a while ago).

Should I expect him to come to the surface when he is hungry? I doubt he is going to starve himself because of burrowing. Thanks for any info!

He should come up if he is hungry, unless of course he is brumating. Mine always come up when hungry though. Helps you make sure you don't feed them too much as well.

Pac is about 3x3 inches, maybe 2.5x2.5.

How can I tell if he is trying to brumate? The temp has actually been a little high lately due to faulty air conditioning in my house (averages 78-82 but we are getting it fixed soon). If I keep the tank damper will it cause him to brumate or is it the other way around? Thanks for the advice guys.

BTW the substrate is about 4-5 inches deep right now, it used to just be peat moss about 2 inches all around.

How big is your frog? Most small ones dont like a hand in the tank. But the bigger ones?
They're worse than pit bulls!! I use tongs to feed mine. I use them to feed pinkies, worms, feeder fish...etc.
I keep my frogs in about an inch of substrate.
They just kinda wiggle their butts in, and stay that way.
The instant I lift the lids off the tanks. ( lids are to keep hands out, not frogs in.) The frogs are out of the substrate, and already jumping to attack the tongs.
I have had a new frog for about a week now. It was a large frog eating crickets. And it was eating a lot of crickets.
In the course of a week, this frog has gone from shy to also attacking the tongs. He has eaten a pinky, and a few mollies already.
A week ago, my hand went in and he tried burrowing down.
Maybe giving less substrate might work, and start getting your frog used to tongs.
Hunger will motivate the frog to eat...and once it does!
Watch out!
Good Luck!
