Question also about shipped snakes

Rottenweiler9 Jun 24, 2003 05:42 PM

Ok I have one more, when a snake is shipped from one state to another, what is the general condition of them when they get here. I know alot of people get their retics through Bob, do you guys pick them up at shows or have them sent to you. I live in IL and don't know of any one out here who deals with retics. There are a couple pet shops that have them put I don't like to buy from pet shops, and plus they are a little pricey, not to mention you don't know the history of the snake.
Again any advice would be good.

Hi,

Are you referring to the general condition of the snake after being shipped, or if it's risky to have a snake shipped to you?

There is definitely a risk factor having the snake shipped to you. BUT, I've had around 15 snakes shipped to me and I've yet to have a problem. Every package I've received was packaged professionally...some better than others. Make sure to ask question. Basically, if they use newspaper for cushioning and to retain heat. Ask if they have a "live on arrival guarantee."

Make sure to give the snake a few days to recoup after being shipped. It's very stressful to be thrown around....

I hope this is somewhat helpful, feel free to email me with questions.

Thanks,

VJ

Depending on the value of the snake, it could be shipped ups overnight or airfreight via Delta. Only one time did I experience a bad problem and it was with ups. I got a shipment containing several albino patternless, several tiger retics, a couple of adult blood pythons, and several jungle carpet pythons. I guess those jerks at ups (the handlers of the package) threw it around or smashed it or something, but in any event, the package was broken open and the plastic containers inside had all been popped open. When I opened the package all the different snakes were all loose in the styrofoam portion of the box (cracked open) but luckily only one was missing; a little female jungle carpet. The breeder quickly replaced this with another and began taping the plastic containers shut for me in the event of another broken box. So all was fine, but I have always wondered what happened to that poor little jungle carpet. I hope she was found by someone that knew how to take care of her and not run over by some warehouse forklift or smashed with a broom. It is this aspect of it I am most concerned about, the potential harm to the snakes, more than any monitary loss I might incur. So ask your breeder to tape the plastic containers shut and double tape the box.

It isn't "Ideas" that fail or succeed,... it is the "Sytstems" which are instilled to launch and sustain the idea that either fail or succeed.>[Me.]
