getting stubborn babies to feed

herbivorous Aug 22, 2004 07:09 PM

Hello. I was wondering if anybody could give me a good way to get a pair of stubborn little babies to eat. I had a group of four Pacific gophers hatch on 7/30, two of which took to pinkies right away, but the other two have yet to eat. I don't really want to force feed them if possible, and I've never had a gophersnake be anything but a bottomless food receptacle in the past. If anyone in the know has some advice to share, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm no expert but if you live out west you could try scenting with western fence lizards. Another trick I've had a lot of success with was feeding chicken pieces to snakes...works good for corns but never tried it on pits.

Also if you live out west you could trap/kill/catch in mouse trap a deer mouse and use it for scenting. I use to see a ton of those critters while flipping carpet and boards in the San Diego foothills.

Good luck,
Russ
