Cobra heat mat problem

tim5580 Aug 22, 2004 09:20 PM

Hi, I bought a new cobra heat mat a few weeks ago. I lost the instructions for it too. But I got it out 3 days ago and I put it under my tank, plugged it in and threw a digital thermometer on it with a min/max setting. It gets up to 89F in the day (might be rising from outside temp too). It drops down to 69F at night. It says it is designed to run at 100F constantly. Is is defective, did I set it up wrong, or is there any way to put more heat back in tank? The tank is on a wood stand with spacers under corners so cord isn't pinched. I was thinking about putting a piece of foam insulation behind it but is that gonna cause a fire? Like I said I lost the instructions but I think they said something about doing that. But I think I am still going to go get a ceramic heat emitter.

Yes, that will definately cause a fire.Heat pads are'nt designed to creat ambient temp, get a bulb, ceramic heater or radiant heat panel.Heat mats are designed for basking only.Remember no bending of the heat mat, outside of tank use only and nothing behind or around the panel.Hope this helps.

I thought it might burn. I was gonna get a heat emitter anyway. Anyone know what size might be best for a 20g long aquarium?

When you go buy the CHE, on the box it will tell you what one to get for your specific size aquarium
