mixing species in terrarium

DeanAlessandrini Aug 22, 2004 10:30 PM

I'm new to working with these guys, just picked up a pair of azureus and set up a terrarium.

I was told is was not a good idea to house other Dendrobates species together.

Anyone doing that?
Thanks.

Yes, it is not a good idea to b/c if you mix in tincs, they can interbreed. And if you add another female they will fight.I don't understand why everyone wants to mix, i think it is much more fun to set up multiple tanks then one w/ like two or three species of frogs.

I think a lot of people (myself included) have seen those cool displays at aquariums and zoos that mix lot of species.

I suppose the zoos do their breeding "in the back room", off display.

Anyway...that's what gave me the idea. I have always beed drawn to those set ups at the zoos, and I wanted to create something similar. Also...personally, I'd rather set up one large terrarium than several small ones.

That said...I really want to breed them successfully, so I will take your advice.

Most zoos destroy all eggs produced when they house different species of frogs together. I believe that having less frogs in a viv makes them healthier due to less stress and competition for food. The best thing to do is to set up smaller individual tanks with only pairs. With the value of frogs I would hate to loose any with a simple act of prevention of housing them separately.

Just curious....So if you have two species that interbreed, are there offspring sterile? and would they be considered a hybrid?

I don't know if they would be steril but they would be a hybrid, which are frowned upon by the majority of dart frog keepers.
