Breeder red foots

TraceH Aug 23, 2004 12:21 AM

How many years does it take a male or female red foot to reach sexual maturity? I have done a lot of research and can't seem to find years or weights. Thanks

Good question Trace..

All I know is that my females are 9.5" and larger.. The youngest are 6 yrs. old and I think are laying eggs.. somebody is (too soon to know if they are fertile).. first time this year the male has shown any interest in the "smaller" ones. But this is the first full year the male has been present too. I imagine smaller ones can breed.. I doubt no younger.

Not much help.. we tried.

You gotta love 'em!

Here we go!! Whatever it's worth.

Went out today.. and found something suspicious in the grass.. started to dig around very carefully.. in the mean time here comes one of my 6 yr. old (raised from a hatchling) Columbian Female RF's.. as if to say: "What are you doing with my first nest?"

She stuck her head right down in the nest..!!

It was a proud Redfoot moment folks!!!!

I've been told 7-12 eggs is typical.. I believe that's for a "mature" adult.

You gotta love 'em!
