what are the chances of getting albinos from breading 100% hets...

djdpython Aug 23, 2004 06:34 AM

ok, im sure this is a stupid question but what % of the clutch (theoretically) would be albinos if i bread 2 100% albino hets together. if i have a limited amount of $ to invest should i just buy a bunch of 100% hets, 1.1 albinos, or an albino male and a bunch of 100% het females. thanks.

het x het 25% albino
albino x het 50% albino
on average
JY produced 5 albinos out of six eggs with albino x het albino

Those are the chances per egg (also albino x albino = 100% chance albino). Your chance of producing at least one albino in a clutch varies depending on the number of eggs.

The link below is to a page where I display the odds for various numbers of eggs. The first table is your chances of producing at least one albino from het X het if you hatch the given number of eggs. The 2nd table is your chances for albino X het.

Ok Randy but the bottom line is that the Punnett square says over a period of time or each egg has a 25% chance of being albino. The more eggs you produce will in fact give you better odds of getting an albino. If you get two or three eggs the less likelihood of an albino. [on average] You have 100 eggs you should have 25 /-albinos. Each egg has a 25 % chance.
The above is about het x het breeding.

Exactly, the more eggs he gets the better his chances. No guarantees since as you point out the square is the chances for each egg, not a guaranteed distribution of a clutch.

Also the original poster was asking about using an albino rather than a het and that will certainly also increase your changes.

While the chance of getting albinos from an albino and 100% het albino matting are 50%, you must remember that Mother Nature has a cruel streak in her - just ask Damon - he got all hets from his male albino to female 100% het albino. It happens sometimes and while you may hope it doesn't happen to you, you should be financially prepared for the worst case scenario. Damon had viable eggs and healthy offspring so even though he didn't experience the worst case scenario, he wasn't expecting what he got from his sire and dam.
I guess it doesn't matter how well you play the game when Mother Nature gets to play the last card!

Good luck!
