Pine woods tree frog vs. gray tree frog

riiotgrrl Aug 23, 2004 09:14 AM

When i went to TN about a month ago, i found what i thought was a grey tree frog. A very tiny baby gray. I brought him back home with me, along with a few other small toads.
So, i was just surfing the net and i found a pic of a Pine Woods tree frog. The info said that they are VERY variable in color, which my little one is. He will change from dark dark brownish gray to a light kiwi green dependign on his mood and temp. I have never seen a gray do that before.
So, i was wondering if anyone had any info on my Pine Woods Tree Frog. The sci. name is different from Hyla versicolor. I can t remember off the top of my head what it is....i just woke up.
ANYWAY, thanks alot, jen

Grays also have the ability to change color.

The pine Woods Treefrogs scientific name is Hyla femoralis. I know nothing about them though. I would think similar care as the tree frog, but you'd have to ask someone who's kept them.

For a positive identification, grays have a colored line under their eye, and bright orange on the inside of their hind legs.

This shows the approx. placement of the line under the eye. It is usually outlined by thin black stripes, but not always.

This just shows the eyes area of a couple of grays so you can get an idea of what your looking for... Some of the pictures are pretty blurry (I didn't have the patience for perfect pictures, and neither did they ) but you still get the idea.

Good luck
Emily

they are smaller and seem to prefer it to be drier than most treefrogs I have.

Mine usually stays grey but turns brown on occassion. He likes to hide in the wide leaves of a plant I have in the tank. His call is very different than a Grey.

You are correct it is a grey.
They are great,if you happen to be lucky enough to have found a male, they love the sound of water running in the bathtub and the vacuum always seems to start them calling.

Enjoy,
Rob
