American or Fowler?

gib3 Aug 23, 2004 11:03 AM

Have a toad from a sandy, marsh area near Ocean City, NJ. Lots of scrub brush, marsh grass, and sand dunes. Have wondered for a year whether it is an American toad or Fowler's. So hard to tell by the written type descriptions. The fact that it is from that type of area makes me think Fowler's. Would Americans be in that type habitat?

it is always possible for them to be a hybrid, even in the wild. bufo's crossbreed a lot compared to other species.
