First Witnessed Mating of Black Heads...

Doug T Aug 23, 2004 11:11 AM

We've had a recent storm pass through with a quick drop in temperatures. Apparently it was enough to spark some love interest in my Black Heads.

This is the first time I've seen mating, and likely the first time they have mated. I know it's off season for them to have a successful breed, but it's great to see that they like each other.

Sorry I didn't have the camera nearby. All my snake cages are relocated for a remodel in the house so I had nothing to take pics with.

Do you house the male and female together? I just recently purchased a male and plan on getting a female when my breeder has his next clutch available. I had read that Black Heads were supposed to be house seperately as they tend to be cannibalistic, but have heard a few people disagree with this. Being a novice, I would be VERY interested to hear about your experience with Black Heads. What works, what doesn't, etc. So few people have them, it's hard to find any info! I do have some books on Australian pythons, but it's never the same as hearing things from people who actually have them and work with them every day.

Hope your black head's mating was a success! Time will tell . . . keep us updated!

I do house them together. I admit that this probably isn't without some risk, but they seem to tolerate and perhaps "enjoy" each other well enough. As the female continues to get more massive, I'll probably move the male out.

As for care, I don't do anything unusual. Just Heat, water dish, several hides.

I don't expect any eggs from this mating. It's way too early. Hopefully whatever worked the other day will work when it's time.
