nicaraguan boa questions

spranks Aug 23, 2004 11:35 AM

I saw a Nicaraguan Boa at the pet store the other day (not petco or anything, a top quality dealer as far as they go) and saw a nice nicaraguan boa. The folks working there told me that they only get to be like 6 feet. I really like boas but have never got one because I don't feel like I could handle (or want to handle) a 10 foot snake. I guess my questions are:

1) Do they really get to be only 6 ft?

2) I know Hogg Island Boas are only like 5-6 feet, but I've heard that they are hard to find in pure bred form because they haven't been imported in years. I don't want to buy a snake thinking that I'll only be 6 feet, and ending up with a 12 foot monster. So I guess what I'm asking is that are they relatively common, and can I expect that if I buy one from a fairly reputable place that it will be a Nicaraguan?

Thanks in advance. I'm itching to get a new herp of some kind, so we'll see if I actually get a boa (maybe I could sell my girlfriend on it), but I figured I'd ask.

Most of if not all the Nicaraguan Boa's you see in shop's or anywhere, are "Farmed C.B. from W.C. Female's" and import's to the U.S.,there are a few Breeder's with C.B.B. Nic.'s but most of these are "Expensive Morph's" so if your pet shop is one you can trust, there Nic.'s are most like'ly Farmed. If you get a Male Nic. he will stay small between 4 & 5 feet and a Female might reach 6 but should stay less than 7 feet. On Hogg Island Boa's the reason they are not imported is because they are Extinct in the wild, there are Breeder's working with Pure Hogg Island Boa's,you just got to be careful who you buy from,a Male Hogg will be around 4 to 5 feet Female's can reach 7 feet.
Good Luck ! In your search there both Good Choice's you can find "Top of the Line Breeder's and Dealer's" in the Classified's here on Kingsnake.com
Have A Good One ! !
