State law....

zooguy Aug 23, 2004 11:55 AM

I recently came across a pamphlet about Utah's laws on reptiles and amphibians. It states that the Great Plains Rat snake is controlled for collection, importation, and possession, meaning that permits are needed to collect, import or possess one. I'm pretty sure that my little corn snake is a creamsicle, implying that he has Great Plains Rat snake blood. Since I don't have any permits for him, am I in violation of the law? I know I can't expect anyone to be able to interpret the law any better than it is written, but any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

First off, I am only guessing in my opinion below. The only realy way to find out is to write or call the local ministry of fish and wildlife (or whatever they call that in the states) to clarify if hybrids are included in that law.

That said, it is my opinion that your creamsicle, being a hybrid of the rat snake, won't be included as it's not a naturally occuring example of the species.

For the most part cops (being me) are dumb and take the simplest form of the law. If it looks like it has Emory Rat Blood then it does and falls under the law. The local Police can not be expected to decern between Hybrids, crosses or genetic morphs, I doubt the law is specific to the point as to refer to them as "Natrually occuring" because it would leave too much to interpatation.
Now as for Paul, I will let you off the hook for the under sized torties if tou promise not naked dancing with Rattle snakes. that always leads to bites in bad places, take from a guy with experience in this department LOL

That's the thing, I don't think that he looks too much like a great plains ratsnake other than the fact that he has a pretty clean white background color. Afterall, he could just be a regular amel. BTW, I'm not too worried about getting raided anytime soon, but you never know, lol! So, what's all this about dancing naked with rattlesnakes? I must have missed something good!

Unless your expecting to be raided anytime soon I wouldnt worry about it.And then I wouldnt worry about it.Unless you point it out how would they even know?I have family members, one a police commisioner(sp)and several others(officers) who have seen my leopard tort when it was just a hatchling.Illnios's law forbids any tortoise or turtle under 6 inches.Im sure if i was in the dept of natural resources dancing naked with protected, endangered rattlesnakes I could get a fine. But Im not planning on doing that just yet...Paul.

Sometimes those laws will explicitly exclude albino versions of the species which a creamsicle is, that may be something to look into.

BTW...If you bought your snake as a corn, what makes you suspect it may be a creamsicle?
